In 1966, Paul Van Doren made the sole twice as thick to make his new trainers last longer and, unlike other shoe manufacturers, he used a type of natural rubber without padding. This decision marked Vans' legacy, as the world's first skateboarders discovered that the composition of the now LEGENDARY ORIGINAL Vans rubber WAFFLE SOLE provided better CONTROL of the skateboard and let them feel the board while they were on it.
